Plan. That word is so common these days that we don't even do
it anymore. What does it mean to plan? Planning involves looking ahead, placing
all tasks to be done to achieve a certain objective sequentially and setting
out deadlines to achieve them. How do we plan? To those who have passed out of
NYSC, it is a thing of joy that they have managed to overcome all the trials
and temptations that come with being a youth corper. However, as is the terms
of life, you leave one stage and graduate to another. As a result, the
challenges that come with the new position. How does all this relate to choices
you have to make after NYSC? The truth is how does it not?
Formally, you have all been relieved of your national youth
corps duties. Now, there is no more community development service group, no
officers to be accountable to, no NYSC uniforms anymore, certainly there is no
clearance and finally, no impromptu meetings at the zonal office. We now have a
right over own lives and the responsibility brought to bear over our shoulders.
It is advisable, that all corps members must have started
planning how to exit the National Youth Service programme and have a planned
map of action before the actual passing out date. If not, you'll just be
stranded. It’s the same as going for an interview without being prepared. When
the passing out day comes, it suddenly dawns on you that you are not
accountable to any authority, except God and the law and that now, all your
actions lie within your choosing as well as the consequences of those actions
for you to bear. In other words, if you commit an offense worthy of jail terms,
you will be sent to jail. So watch out!
Freedom is sweet, but how do we control ourselves to practice
liberty within the ambits of the law? We must be self disciplined and
knowledgeable when it comes to the law. If not the law would be fighting us
instead of protecting us.
A thing about life is that choices are so personal. At the
end of the day, you would bear the brunt. As we all leave the NYSC scheme, let
us remember to be true to ourselves and know that now, we are accountable for
all of our actions. This time, there is no bail-out and the only ID card we
have are our driver's license or national ID. We must all make our own choices
